By far the most solar energy is absorbed in the tropics and subtropics. The energy powers violent thunderstorms that pump water vapour and trace gases high into the atmosphere and generate copious amounts of electric energy that is discharged both to the ground and to the ionosphere above.

This page is the gateway to international research into processes related to powerful electric storms, their perturbation to the upper atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere, and their relation to a changing climate.
